a history of rust
by Josh Thompson
as I pour another bourbon,
I ponder the news
I heard today.
the passing of my hero.
the bombing of my favorite city.
the late night ghosts
opening their mouths
to swallow me whole.
and what I once believed
is thought to be extinct now
and my bones will be found
alongside my best love poem
which nobody will read
because their eyes are watery
and their hearts are
bruised fruit.
Josh Thompson is a poet and short story writer living in Brooklyn, NY. His poems have appeared in a variety of
journals and online magazines. He bartends to pay the piles of bills littering his table and he tends to write more
profoundly when there's a bottle of red wine nearby.
